Leading UX & Service Design for Robotic Manufacturing Innovation
Project type
Government project
Date
2019
Location
Hong Kong
At Radius Innovation, I was tasked with leading UX and service design initiatives across the consumer, healthcare, and industrial sectors. One key project was a robotic manufacturing initiative for Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), focused on driving economic growth by supporting startups in their efforts to commercialise innovation, scale businesses, and create jobs. The challenge was that startups faced significant barriers in prototyping, manufacturing, and exporting their products.
I was responsible for leading the design of a scalable innovation hub that would enable startups to rapidly prototype and accelerate product development, while aligning design with both user needs and business goals. I needed to ensure the initiative addressed pain points in the product development lifecycle and supported the goal of global trade expansion.
I led a cross-functional team of designers, strategists, and engineers to design and launch Proshop, a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility. We integrated 3D print farming and automation into the facility’s design, ensuring that small-batch production was feasible. We conducted user-centered research, including engaging with over 300 businesses to understand their challenges and tailor the solutions accordingly. Additionally, I developed a comprehensive business case to analyse the feasibility of small-batch production, which would allow startups to make manufacturing more accessible.
Result:
Proshop is now fully operational and has become a critical asset for startups in Hong Kong, helping them grow, innovate, and export their products. The facility has contributed to the economic diversification of the region and created jobs, while the startups benefit from a streamlined process that turns their ideas into market-ready products. This initiative has led to increased global trade potential and bolstered the startup ecosystem in Hong Kong.
